Permalinks – Very Important For Free Website Traffic

Written By: Gerry on December 17, 2008 11 Comments

Do you have a Blog?

If you have a WordPress Blog, you may notice that your posts are labelled a certain way.

For example – take a look at this blog domain name.

It is http://gerrywalter.com.

If I use the standard settings from WordPress every post would be labelled with a number instead of the name of the post. So it would look like this by default.

http://.gerrywalter.com/?p=72

This is very bad for organic search results.

You really want your page titles or names to be the same as the titles of your posts. This will make a huge difference when the Search Engines spider your website or blog. Search engines pick up keywords and the keywords in the domain name make a big difference.

So – you should ensure your website has the keywords in the page title. This is very important if you want your pages and posts to be picked up by the search engines.

The good news is – if you have a WordPress Self Hosted Blog – this is very easy to do.

Firstly, go to;

“Settings” in the right hand side of your Administration Panel.

More Traffic With Permalinks

Then click on “Permalinks” and choose ‘Custom Structure”.

More Traffic With Permalinks

Then add in;

/%catergory%/%postname%/

This will ensure all of your pages use the actual name of your posts. Then, you have more chance of the search engines picking up your pages. It also make it more user friendly and visually pleasing.

    The site I’m building for an HVAC company I work for only gets about 30 clicks per month. I am indexed in major search engines but I appear way too deep in the results to find. I use meta keywords on every page.
